Why join Graduate Women WA?

Graduate Women WA is the Western Australian branch of the Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW), a National Affiliate of Graduate Women International (GWI).  Graduate Women WA was founded in 1923.  The WA branch represents and advocates the views of graduate women in Western Australia and responds to local issues of importance.  Through our affiliation with AFGW and GWI we also contribute to National and International debate and activities. GWI is represented on UN committees UNICEF, ECOSOC, ILO and  UNESCO (consultative status).

Locally, Graduate Women WA provides forums for networking and support among graduate women.  Through our activities we promote life-long education.  We deliver workshops, present events with eminent speakers and hold regular member activities.  Our major endeavour is empowering women through education.  Annually, we provide around $30,000 of assistance in scholarships to support Western Australian girls and women, particularly candidates completing postgraduate research degrees.

GW WA is committed to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) including women's role in disease prevention and environmental and peace issues. We are part of the cultural diversity within AFGW and GWI; NFAs provide a wide range of educational, humanitarian and cultural activities, and work together through GWI to help and assist each other to improve the quality of life of women around the world.

Financial assistance for women's education

At the state and territory level AFGW helps women undertaking postgraduate studies by providing bursaries. Through the long established Trust Fund, Graduate Women (WA) provides annual bursaries and scholarships to post-graduate students seeking to enhance the outcomes of their research. GW WA also provides a scholarship to a student resident of St Catherine's College and provides other grants for a diverse range of educational programs, especially in the STEM area.

Your contribution

Involvement with Graduate Women (WA) provides many opportunities to network and share knowledge, lobby government and support the advancement of women. We recognise that women have many demands on their time and may be reluctant to join organisations in which they cannot always be active. If you cannot be active at this time, consider joining Graduate Women (WA) to support our objectives and participate whenever you are able.
